Job Description
Seeking an Innovation Intellectual Property Paralegal. We are looking for creative and high energy paralegals interested in working at the nexus of law, business, technology, data, and consumers. Our innovation division of Allstates Law and Regulation department is growing to enable our emerging and service businesses to thrive as well as support matters across the enterprise as to technology, international, and intellectual property. The Intellectual Property Paralegal will support Intellectual Property Attorneys and other Paralegals with day-to-day activities related to Allstates Patent Program.
Core competencies
- Prepare and file new patent assignments and declarations.
- File patent applications and amendments with the USPTO and work with foreign Intellectual Property Counsel.
- Maintain Intellectual Property management system (IPfolio), including maintaining records to ensure accuracy throughout patent lifecycle.
- Assist business partners in answering questions regarding their patent filings.
- Support the management of patent preparation and prosecution matters and to assure it meets Allstates standards of quality, timeliness and cost.
- Administer patent-related awards program and assist with reporting and presentation preparation related to patent reward program.
- Play a key role in supporting the strategy determination, action planning, and communication with business partners, business units, and other areas of Law & Regulation.
- Comfort with executing on goals and objectives through ambiguity and in a changing business and legal landscape.
- Prefer experience in the following areas: technology, international, intellectual property, strategy, commercial, data, and/or highly regulated sectors.
- Preference for business and work experience outside legal context.

Job Qualifications
- Education: Bachelors Degree in related field -or- Paralegal Certificate required, American Bar Association (ABA) approved preferred.
- The ideal candidate will have hands-on Intellectual Property docketing and prosecution experience, and preferably some experience with in-house Intellectual Property work.
- Experience and good knowledge about priority dates, associated registration numbers, responses to office actions, U.S. and Foreign Filing deadlines, notices of allowance, restriction requirements, issue notification and issue fees, and formal patent documents such as POAs and assignments.
- Experience with USPTO databases (PAIR, EFS Web, EPAS), and preferably other foreign PTO websites such as ESPACENET and WIPO Analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to identify, prioritize and solve problems effectively regarding complex matters.
- Basic budget management skills and ability to reconcile expense reports.
- Basic project management skills and experience interacting with law firm/vendors.
- Basic researching, proofreading, and formatting skills.
- Ability to collaborate and interact with all levels of personnel and build strong relationships with business colleagues.
- Strong interpersonal skills, advanced written and oral communication and effective customer service skills.
- Ability to identify inconsistencies in routine work and initiate corrective action within own workflow.
- Able to deliver results with a sense of urgency.
- Adapts well to change; able to multi-task and make effective decisions in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Regular, predictable attendance is an essential function of this job.
- Experience in a large corporate environment as a paralegal is desirable.
- Location: Northbrook/Chicago, IL, Irving, TX & Charlotte, NC.
