Core competencies
- Prepare and prosecute strategic, high quality patents.
- Manage a patent portfolio with an eye towards strategic and competitive initiatives.
- Assign patent preparation and prosecution matters to outside counsel and supervise their work product to assure it meets Allstates standards of quality, timeliness and cost.
- Drive Allstates patent harvesting sessions with the emerging and service business to help ensure that appropriate inventions are identified and patented.
- Real time and critical business-focused commercial legal advice for a broad range of businesses and issues.
- Anticipate legal concerns and provide creative problem solving in a dynamic business environment.
- Excellent executive presence and concise verbal and written communication a must.
- Play a key role in strategy determination, action planning, and communication with business partners, business units, and other areas of Law & Regulation.
- Complex research as to applicability of pertinent laws, statutes, regulations, rules, and other legal authority across the globe; ability to summarize concisely and collaborate with other areas of company to determine impact of new legal authority on business and enable action plans.
- Comfort with executing on goals and objectives through ambiguity and in a changing business and legal landscape.
- Execution abilities within a parent company and its family of companies.
- Draft, review and negotiate complex matters and agreements (technology agreements including software and hardware preferred).
- Prefer experience in the following areas: technology, international, intellectual property, strategy, commercial, data, and/or highly regulated sectors.
- Leadership qualities (team building and collaboration a must).
- Preference for business and work experience outside legal context.
A typical day for an Innovation Attorney might include:
- Harvesting, drafting and prosecuting strategic, high quality patents.
- Advising business partners on a new technology product rollout or a new corporate structure.
- Coordinating, understanding, and synthesizing complex legal advice from other attorneys within Law and Regulation and outside experts to advise business partners in a simple, direct manner.
- Researching and advising on international intellectual property issues.

Job Qualifications
- Possesses a juris doctorate and a license to practice law in Illinois (and/or other states as required).
- Admission to the USPTO.
- Drafted at least 50 original patent applications and personally prepared over 200 substantive amendments.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Strong academic credentials.
- Experience in a large corporate environment as an attorney is desirable.
- Ability to work with clients in a team-oriented partnership to help them arrive at solutions to their problems.
- Flexibility to accept new and different challenges in a fast paced, high tech environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Location: Northbrook/Chicago, IL, Irving TX, or Charlotte, NC.
