Summary
The Underwriter III is responsible for underwriting applications based on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) rules and regulations. You will evaluate the risk to determine whether the risk is rated correctly. Additionally, candidates will analyzes data to determine benefits and rates. There will be direct contact with clients and customers by phone, email, fax and mail. Depending on the area, the following responsibilities may vary: contact with Department of Insurance Personnel, create or review rating materials for accuracy, reply to Department of insurance complaints and Market conduct requests, communicate program changes to clients via bulletins, and/or review and recommend policy language changes.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Answer incoming calls from Agents, Mortgage Companies and Insureds
- Underwrite new business, endorsements & cancellations according to NFIP Rules
- Interpret and explain guidance/rules found in the NFIP manual
- Assist agents in Quoting
- Correct Pending Errors according to NFIP Standards and re-underwrite as needed after internal audit review
- Makes independent decisions within guidelines and procedures
- Has gained knowledge and experience with computer system and company products and services
- Learn to process Department of Insurance Complaints
- Become proficient in all Submit for Rate risks
Basic Qualifications:
- 3-4 years of Underwriting experience
- Experience with advance flood insurance rating
- Monitors trends and identifies the need for new or revised underwriting policies, procedures, and practices
- Provides guidance and assistance to less experience underwriters
- Makes contact with client or customer to resolve questions or issues that remain
- Engages in basic quality assurance activities
- High level of technical expertise and in-depth knowledge in assigned lines of business
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2-3 years insurance experience
- Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast paced high volume team base environment
- Experience with computer and phone equipment
- Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude through a friendly and outgoing phone voice
- Must have excellent listening skills and verbal communication skills
- Capable interpersonal skills with a collaborative team approach
- Familiar with MS Outlook, Word and Excel
- Agency license (Property & Casualty)
- Basic understanding of FEMA Flood Program a plus
- College degree a plus
- Bilingual a plus
