Liberty Mutual Global Retail Markets is looking for a curious, collaborative, high-motivated Actuary Senior Technical Professional to join the Loss Trend Analytics team. This individual will be responsible for leading special projects related to emerging loss trends. They will need to be comfortable with taking unstructured questions and turning them into actionable insights for GRM leadership, consistently collaborating effectively with a variety of functional areas. They will use advanced analytical and multivariate techniques to understand and forecast topics related to accident frequency and severity for both Liberty Mutual and the industry. They will be responsible for owning and communicating the results of their work to senior leadership and other stakeholders across the organization, with the potential to drive high-visibility outcomes.

The successful candidate will have good business judgment and influencing skills, enjoy identifying and solving complex analytical problems, be comfortable owning and independently driving projects that receive significant visibility, and possess the ability to explain such work in non-technical (business) contexts. Good communication skills are essential as there will be a significant level of interaction with other functional areas (e.g., Finance, Product Management, Claims, and Reserving) as well as senior leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform in-depth complex analytical analyses, using univariate and multivariate approaches, to explain historical frequency and severity and forecast future loss trends for Personal and Business Lines.
  • Utilize project management skills to manage several projects concurrently and ideate future projects for the team. Scope unstructured questions appropriately to ensure resources needed for completion are commensurate with the potential value of the work.
  • Stay current on forces that could impact loss trends today or in the future (e.g., unemployment rate, medical inflation, distracted driving).
  • Example projects include: understanding the correlation between Personal and Business Lines loss trends, quantifying the impact of new vehicle technology on loss trends, understanding and projecting the impact of the shift in worker age on loss trends.
  • Lead cross-functional working groups with other functional areas such as Product and Claims to understand, isolate, and forecast various drivers of loss trends.
  • Provide clear and concise communication of technical actuarial work to technical and non-technical audiences, cross-functionally and to senior leadership.
  • Interact with and provide technical assistance and information to peers, senior managers, and others within and outside of the organization.
  • Mentor, motivate, and train less experienced staff and peers.

****Preferred location are Seattle, Boston or Chicago but may be open to additional locations for the right person****

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Insurance designations desirable. Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) designation preferred, or comparable actuarial education/designation combined with relevant experience.
  • Typically 0-2 years post-fellowship. Minimum of 7 years of progressively more responsible experience (typically 10 or more) in an actuarial role, some of which may include experience as an actuarial candidate taking exams.
  • Strong analytical skills with solid understanding of all casualty actuarial techniques, standards, and assumptions.
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to make decisions with incomplete information.
  • Ability to establish and build effective relationships within and outside the organization.
  • Ability to motivate and mentor peers.
  • Strong advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, preferably familiarity with multivariate modeling techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and drive projects from inception to completion.
  • Ability to learn as needed.
  • Able to undertake new processes/analysis based on cutting edge research and technologies, within and outside the insurance industry.
  • Ability to grasp theoretical concepts.
  • Ability to give effective training and presentations to senior management and other groups.
  • Strong MS Office Excel and SAS skills preferred; Ability to build complex models.
