Job Summary
This is an opportunity to join the Personal Insurance Business Technology - Business Intelligence & Analytics Team (PIBT BI&A). The person hired will perform as a Lead Developer on our Hadoop/Big Data team working on many complex and strategic initiatives. The hired individual will be tasked to provide oversight into growing our Best Practices in the Big Data environment, help establish new opportunities for automating our development practice and code deployment and identify new frameworks and opportunities for code reuse as we continue to grow in the Hadoop environment.

The Individual will need to participate in all phases of SDLC, partner with business in data discovery, and provide input into solutions that span across our traditional Data Warehouse and Big Data platforms. This person will work together with the Big Data Development Teams to provide technical expertise for various big data projects. Under limited supervision, performs expert programing, configuring, and/or analysis for impactful and visible projects. Acts as subject matter expert and technical expert across multiple applications, systems and technologies. Leads investigation and resolution efforts for critical, high impact problems and incidents. The hired individual will also have the responsibility for PI Big Data Ops and Administration with a strong focus on Security, Currency, and Optimization within the Big Data Platform.

This job will provide a technical leadership and will not lead others.


Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
Manages the strategic plans and tactical activities for assigned information systems and business unit systems projects. Acts as subject matter expert across multiple applications, systems and technologies leveraging technical and business knowledge to drive the planning and execution of complex initiatives. Responsibilities include performing complex analysis, expert level design, configuration and programming functions for impactful and visible projects. Leads investigation and resolution efforts for critical, high impact problems, defects, and incidents. Contributes to staffing and project plan estimations in collaboration with the project manager and other key stakeholders. Assesses the technical viability of projects and objectives. Acts as a technology advocate and independently seeks opportunities where technology can be utilized to improve the business. Builds, maintains, and utilizes partnerships across the enterprise ensuring the best use of resources. Provides technical leadership, fosters a team environment, and provides mentorship and feedback to technical resources. Manages the effective use of line of business resources to implement ongoing projects, enhancements, initiatives, and/or problem resolution. Applies knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to formulate solutions within the context of assigned projects. Ensures project team's work complies with Travelers standards, processes, and protocols. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or its equivalent in work experience, and five years of programming/development experience.

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
  • Design, implement and deploy custom applications on Hadoop
  • Troubleshoot production issues within the Hadoop environment
  • Performance tuning of a Hadoop processes and applications
  • Proven experience as a Hadoop Developer/Analyst in Business Intelligence and Data management production support space is needed.
  • Strong communication, technology awareness and capability to interact work with senior technology leaders is a must
  • Knowledge of Hadoop and the Hadoop ecosystem required - Proven experience within Hortonworks Hadoop ecosystems (MapReduce, HDFS, YARN, Hive, HBase, Sqoop, Pig, Hue, Spark, Kafka, etc.)
  • Good knowledge on Agile Methodology and the Scrum process.
  • Delivery of high-quality work, on time and with little supervision
  • Critical Thinking/Analytic abilities
  • Developing Standards and Best Practices for the Big Data Platform
  • Minimum of 5 years of building and coding applications using Hadoop components - HDFS, Hbase, Hive, Sqoop, Spark, Flume etc.
  • Minimum of 3 years of coding Python/PySpark
  • Minimum 5 years understanding of traditional ETL tools & Data Warehousing architecture
  • Minimum 10 years of hands on Software development experience in Data Warehouse/ETL/Business Intelligence domain
  • Experience in Teradata and other RDBMS is a plus.
  • Must be proficient in SQL/HiveQL
  • Hands on expertise in Linux/Unix and scripting skills are required.
  • Experience in Ab Initio, .Net, Java, and/or Talend is a plus.
  • Personal Insurance industry knowledge is a plus.
