Our superior financial strength and consistent record of strong operating returns mean security for our customers - and opportunities for our employees. You will find Travelers to be full of energy and a workplace in which you truly can make a difference.

Job Summary

Are you a strategic thinker who cares deeply about the details? Do you confidently facilitate group sessions and present to stakeholders? Enjoy analyzing diverse inputs and finding patterns in the complexity? Have a passion for simple, beautiful, effective visual design, along with a desire to execute efficient, standards-based, scalable solutions? Do you love to iterate on concepts, using testing and experimentation to learn as you go? If this sounds like you, we have a great opportunity on our Design System team.

To create exceptional experiences for customers, partners and employees, Travelers launched an enterprise design system. We had our first release in 2018 and now seek a senior designer to help lead the next phase of development. In this role, you will serve as the UX architect for the team, working closely with the product owner to understand the needs of our users through research and testing activities. You'll leverage those insights to drive the definition, organization, and interaction design of interface patterns. As a key point of contact for other teams across the enterprise using the design system, you'll also provide coaching and consulting to ensure their success, while supporting our team as we learn from that use to help strengthen the system.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Support the product owner to set design system strategy, making it an indispensable platform for creating better product experiences across Travelers.
  • Collaborate with product designers, product owners, developers, and business stakeholders to gain input for the design system team and ensure it achieves our strategic objectives.
  • Engage with other cross-functional teams to support their adoption of the design system, provide coaching and input, and help them contribute back to the system.
  • Lead the team in gathering user-based insights and feedback, by engaging others in cooperative design and critique sessions, maintaining a regular cadence of user interviews and research, and testing our solutions.
  • Ensure exceptional craftsmanship in design artifacts, including personas, user flows, IA maps, pattern comps, prototypes, and more.
  • Work closely with the developers on our team in order to create accessible, standards-compliant, reusable interface patterns that are production-ready.
  • Help lead the team in continuous improvement efforts, finding opportunities to make our work more effective.
  • Define user stories and run experiments to determine the best means of delivering value.
  • Provide input to practice and product leadership to ensure we have adequate capacity for sustaining and advancing the design system.
  • Evaluate and test various tools and methods that will strengthen our design platform, such as UI and prototype design tools, pattern distribution management tools, etc.
  • Support vendor relationships as we increasingly leverage the design system for applications provided by outside partners, and work with vendor teams to build out our design platform.
  • Serve as a leader in our experience design practice, helping to recruit new members, coach more junior designers, and build a mature, high-performing design group.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in graphic design, psychology, human factors, social sciences or related field or 5 years of User Experience work experience required.

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
  • Typical incumbent experience level 8+ years
  • Experience advocating for user design at an organizational level.

Job Specific & Technical Skills & Competencies
  • Experience defining questions for, and designing, user research studies, conducting research activities, evaluating results, and synthesizing clear, actionable insights.
  • Mastery of common information architecture and interaction design methods and artifacts, such as site maps, taxonomies, flow diagrams, mental models, content inventories, wireframes, etc.
  • Proven ability to facilitate diverse groups of stakeholders and users in workshops and meetings, sometimes with minimal planning, and providing a productive, enjoyable, collaborative experience.
  • Strong understanding of front-end web technologies and development approaches, including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, mobile-first responsive web design, and common frameworks such as React.
  • Experience championing and growing a user-centric culture, including usability and accessibility standards and practices.
  • Familiarity with lean and agile approaches to creating software, and a desire to learn and improve.
  • Experience with creating or working on pattern libraries, style guides, or design systems.
