Job Description

The Allstate Life and Retirement (ALR) Unit Manager position requires a positive individual that thrives in a fast paced environment. Excellent communication skills are a must as this is a highly visible role requiring effective, professional interactions with individuals from all levels of the New York region; both internally and with our external partners.

Individuals who enjoy working with Personal Financial Representatives, agents and sales professionals are good candidates. The Unit Manager role requires heavy phone time working directly with producers on their submitted life and annuity business, as well as advocating on behalf of the customer and producer for corrections and exceptions. Strong interpersonal skills will be required to ensure excellent working relationships for effective problem resolution; addressing opportunity areas and implementing corrective action. Case work involves partnering with various ALR processing teams, Field Sales Leaders, outside vendors including Exam One and multiple annuity companies.

Attaining established ALR goals while delivery quality to our customers is top priority. The ALR Unit Manager will need to coordinate, develop and implement strategies to achieve these goals. The ability to interpret information of moderate complexity will be expected, as will the ability to remain nimble, consistently re-evaluating and adjusting team work load/priorities to achieve our mutual success.

This is a great opportunity for someone with management experience or someone that has demonstrated leadership skills and is ready to manage a team of 4 made up of Allstate employees and temporary consultants. Conducting all performance management activities, including goal setting, performance reviews and development opportunities will be expected. Of importance will be the ability to foster an environment of trust, mutual respect, honoring diversity and encouraging continuous growth and personal development.

Inherent to the unit manager role is the need for multi-tasking, intermediate level Microsoft office suite skills, presentation skills and the ability to manage a case load while leading the team. Reporting on team goals, managing a budget and presenting to groups of employees as well as producers are part of the role. Managing a team calendar, including established personal time off black-out periods is required. Coordination of training and extra resources during peak work times will be necessary. Recognition is of great importance. Establishing creative department recognition and team incentive programs that engage and inspire on both the individual and team levels will be expected.

Job Qualifications

  • Recommend 1-2 years Property & Casualty (P&C) and/or Financial Services sales support and/or operation management experience
  • Experience in life insurance and/or annuity experience is highly preferred as ALR Support Team specializes in ensuring smooth processing of life and annuity business.
  • 4-year college degree required
  • Preferred experience in Home Office rotation, Regional Office, SSD or Field Sales
  • Strong Communication Skills to address complex Business issues and Processes.
  • Understands pricing, claims, local market planning, sales trend analysis, marketing data and financial analysis
  • P&C and Financial Services product knowledge helpful
  • Possesses familiarity with industry including competitors and trends
  • Possesses first level sales knowledge, sales processes, back office support knowledge
  • Requires knowledge of agent contracts, compliance requirements, Agency Standards, and Allstate policies and procedures
  • Experienced implementation tactics for new initiatives
  • Experienced using Allstate technology and Microsoft Office products.
  • Highly capable of independent work but may possibly require some management assistance when new to role.
  • Industry certifications such as Excel, FSCP, FLMI and CLU are a plus.
