This position will perform entry-level underwriting duties in support of a regional underwriting team. The Associate Underwriter will perform the preliminary review of new risks as well as manage the renewal process for existing accounts. General duties will include the evaluation of applications, endorsements, and related underwriting documents. The Associate will review individual Commercial Lines submissions to evaluate the degree of exposure and approve, request additional information, or reject based on Company risk selection guidelines. This position functions in a production support role, but may be called upon to conduct agency visits, develop new business, and support marketing in a territory of assigned agents. The Underwriting Associate operates within a clearly defined level of delegated underwriting authority and refers risks of higher exposure or complexity to a senior underwriter. The position may also perform ancillary administrative duties for commercial or farm line accounts to support agency service objectives.


The individual particularly suited for this position must be a self-starter, demonstrating self-discipline and strong organizational skills. Our assignment requires someone who is results oriented, capable of operating effectively in a teamwork environment with limited day-to-day supervision. You must be computer astute, familiar with common business software and adaptable to changing priorities.

The person we seek must have a strong underwriting orientation with excellent risk analysis skills. The individual must be results oriented with superior time management and organizational skills; have effective communications aptitude with the ability to interact effectively with agents and company personnel, both verbally and in writing; possess excellent analytical and financial skills to evaluate risks, determine exposures and assess coverage issues. We seek a person with a minimum of three years of property-casualty insurance experience working in a commercial underwriting assignment.

Education and Experience

To be considered, a Bachelors degree is preferred. However, equivalent experience in a related assignment will be considered. This position requires ongoing commitment to continuing education in insurance with completion or active participation in business relevant insurance certifications such as IIA, CPCU, or CIC. A minimum of three years of progressively challenging business-related experience as a Commercial Underwriter, Agency Producer, or other related insurance discipline is required.
