This position will be located in San Diego, California. The Coverage Attorney will provide legal counsel and support to RiverStone associates regarding construction defect matters not in litigation or arbitration against RiverStone insurers, including insurance coverage, claim handling, allocation, cost sharing, and settlement agreements. The Coverage Attorney will provide support to RiverStone associates and managers in communicating and asserting coverage positions including with respect to coverage analysis letters and settlement negotiations.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide legal counsel and support for RiverStone associates and management in making informed decisions regarding claims, in particular by: assessing RiverStone insurers rights and obligations; evaluating material risks and options facing RiverStone insurers; and identifying realistic options available to RiverStone insurers.
  • Provide legal counsel and support to enable RiverStone associates and management to make timely decisions.
  • Provide legal counsel and support as efficiently as possible, including; making full use of internal staff and resources; and managing outside counsel and vendors, as needed.
  • Report and provide legal counsel to RiverStone associates and management on legal developments regarding insurance coverage and claims handling issues relevant to RiverStones business.
  • Travel to and personally appear at court conferences, mediations, arbitrations, strategy sessions, witness interviews, site visits or as otherwise necessary, primarily in the United States, but with some international travel possible.
  • Provide testimony when called upon for information that is not privileged, confidential or protected from disclosure.
  • Assist with review of potential acquisitions.
  • Maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and ethics.
  • Develop creative ideas and solutions to real time business problems and/or business opportunities.
  • Empower self and teammates to continuously improve RiverStones business processes / systems and develop and escalate ideas and solutions.
  • Consistently deliver superior customer service to both internal and external business partners.
  • Demonstrate alignment with RiverStones Commitments.
  • Prioritize and organize work in a self-directed manner.
  • Attain and maintain knowledge of assigned department.
  • Perform other duties as required, including supporting and coordinating with other department colleagues.

    Required Skills

  • Must exhibit excellent writing skills providing cogent and succinct analysis of facts, issues and the law with sound reasoning and conclusions.
  • Excellent speaking and negotiation skills ability to communicate effectively and efficiently to a wide variety of audiences, including senior management, company employees with no legal background, mediators, adverse parties and judges.
  • Exceedingly well organized and able to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Able to manage external and internal resources effectively and in a reasonable, professional manner.
  • Adept at contract interpretation.

    Required Education

    Completion of law school with a Juris Doctorate and admission to California state bar.

    Required Experience

    Minimum of 7 -15 years of complex insurance coverage experience, whether as outside counsel or through employment in the insurance industry.
