Come work as a Senior Underwriter with a growing company that offers opportunities to learn and advance alongside accomplished, experienced Surety leaders. Our surety specialists are strategically located in eight territories across the United States, including a Southwest Regional office soon to be located in Glendale, CA.

As a Senior Underwriter you will gain experience in analyzing surety account business, primarily in Commercial Surety. In addition, you will review underwriting data and assess risk for both new and existing Surety accounts, including written recommendations and spreadsheet analyses. Surety producer relationships will be assigned and the Senior Underwriter will be responsible for managing those producer relationships including both management of underwriting results and growth of new business. Technical direction and training will be provided along with appropriate levels of underwriting authority.

1. Manage a profitable book of Commercial Surety account business by evaluating results and conducting portfolio reviews for assigned surety producers and in conjunction with the Surety team.

2. Has underwriting responsibility for a book of new and renewal business. Examines, identifies, and evaluates exposures by analyzing documentation from various sources, such as financial statements, credit data, etc.. Makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within assigned underwriting authority level in partnership with Surety team. Executes and implements underwriting strategy as determined by management and in compliance with state laws and company guidelines..

3. Develops superior working relationships with producers to successfully promote growth, retention, and profitability of Commercial Surety accounts. . Works closely with other OneBeacon departments, including claims, actuary and risk control staff in an effort to better service producers and accounts.

4. Collaborates with Surety team members to manage work requirements and production activities to provide accurate and timely service.

5. Documents files and reports via systems and tools.

6. Regularly travels to key producers/accounts and remains a visible presence in the marketplace. Monitors agency action plans and participates in account management, agency planning and marketing meetings to best position the business for the future. May participate in industry events and/or committees.

7. Provides training and mentoring to less experienced underwriters and/or underwriting assistants.

8. Stays abreast of industry, territory and insurance trends.

Possesses demonstrated technical knowledge and skills, including surety products and industry. Must be able to identify and describe the major hazards contained in bonds. Must be able to independently identify and describe the exposures and risks to consider in making an underwriting decision. Must know how to effectively obtain information needed to make an underwriting decision.

Must have proven analytical, decision making, problem-solving, communication, presentation, listening and organizational skills. Must be able to work both independently and as a highly collaborative member of a team. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite as well as electronic underwriting systems. Must be able to work in a fast pace and rapidly changing environment.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree preferable in business or finance or equivalent professional experience. Minimum of 2-5 years Commercial or Contract Surety account underwriting experience. Professional insurance designation is preferred (AFSB, CPCU).
