Come work as a senior level underwriting expert on the OneBeacon Specialty Property team! Our OBSP team has extensive experience in specialized property accounts and applies this expertise to deliver flexible, innovative and high-quality insurance solutionsall supported by superior service to our customers, backed by the financial strength of the OneBeacon balance sheet.

We currently have an opportunity reporting to the Senior VP of the Southeast Region, located in either our Alpharetta or Atlanta office locations. The Special Property Underwriting Consultant manages all components of development, growth and profitability for the excess property book of business in the Southeast territory. The primary focus is on new and renewal business production and account management.

1. Maximizes opportunities for underwriting profitable new and renewal excess property business, as appropriate based on market conditions, by leveraging business relationships, product knowledge and underwriting acumen. Develops and maintains an active target account list tracking prospects and account rounding and/or missed opportunities. Manages financial performance of assigned territory including: accident year loss ratio, premium plans (new business, retention, and rate/exposure increases), and commission targets.
2. Underwrites an excess property book of business. Manages underwriting quality and book management. Reviews eligibility, class fit, price, deductibles, ITV and losses to determine exposures. Executes underwriting strategy as determined by management, including portfolio management, self-audits of new and renewal business and well documented approvals of underwriting edits. Ensures compliance with standards and assigned underwriting authorities.
3. Demonstrates a strong understanding of exposures and key coverage issues. Makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within broad underwriting authority. Implements underwriting decisions in compliance with state laws.
4. Develops superior working relationships with brokers to successfully promote achievement of mutual growth and profitability goals and to supply the appropriate products and services. Works closely with and establishes strong business partnerships with other OneBeacon departments, including claims and actuary staff in an effort to better service brokers and accounts.
5. Regularly travels to key brokers/accounts and remains highly visible in the marketplace. Anticipates the needs of the agency plant, analyzes trends, and implements proactive strategies that best position the business. Understands and communicates the OneBeacon underwriting appetite. Participates in industry events and/or committees.
6. Gathers and analyzes competitor information and broker specific reports on assigned new business flow, retention, profitability and potential, to support territorial rate reviews.
7. Provides training and mentoring to less experienced underwriters.
8. Maintains a strong professional knowledge of competitive, regulatory and legal environments and applies this information effectively.

Expert knowledge of excess property underwriting, pricing, and coverage issues. Must be able to underwrite catastrophe perils including wind, earthquake and flood and have a solid understanding of catastrophe modeling tools including AIR and RMS. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office, including Excel. Must maintain strong professional knowledge of legislative issues, industry trends and marketplace issues for the line of business within the territory. Must be able to act as coach and mentor to junior members of the department. Must possess a high and extensive level of technical knowledge and skills including product and industry.

Education and Experience:
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelors degree and a minimum of 7 - 10 years of progressively more complex, commercial excess property underwriting experience.
