Job Summary
We are looking for a different type of architect! This isn't about drawing boxes and arrows (although, yes, you still have to do that too); it's about providing technology leadership and filling in technical gaps while having fun at the same time.

Architecture in Travelers Business Insurance is demanding. We have hundreds of applications, tens of strategies, and one architecture team to provide IT guidance. This guidance takes on many forms: digging into code, defining system behavior, establishing technical roadmaps, partnering with the business to understand requirements, or communicating with senior leadership.

Our candidate is current with technology trends (cloud native, micro-services, functional programming), codes when required, thinks strategically, executes on a vision, and has a positive attitude with a sense of humor.




Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Communicate effectively and in the context of your audience
  • Think strategically about solutions, and work to accomplish them. Define roadmaps, help build strong teams, measure the IT/business benefit to a solution, and possess a willingness to change course in the face of new information.
  • Code (when applicable). You know your way around design patterns, object oriented and functional paradigms. You won't always be coding but you aren't afraid to roll up your sleeves if required. (We are primarily a JavaScript / C# / Java shop)
  • Stay current with technology trends: cloud native, micro services, functional programming, big data, etc...
  • Work with external partners / vendors to evaluate products, staff resources, and design solutions
  • Establish your own priorities and balance work
  • Learn the insurance business to better develop solutions that fit our needs
  • Provide subject matter expertise to the greater organization across our architectural dimensions (coding patterns / practices, business intelligence, CRM and document creation / management, security, etc... )



Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent required. 3 years of experience in enterprise, application, and/or information architecture required.

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred. 5 years of experience in enterprise, application, and/or information architecture preferred.

Technical Knowledge: Has a solid working knowledge of capabilities and direction of technology, coupled with an in-depth knowledge of the technology required and the needs of business environment necessary to support assigned projects. Develops solutions to meet business needs that reflect a clear understanding of the objectives, practices and procedures of the corporation, department and business unit.

Problem Solving & Decision Making: Demonstrates sound analytical and diagnostic skills dealing with issues that are not readily defined and/or conflict with available information. Knows where to obtain information needed to make the appropriate decisions. Breaks a problem down to manageable pieces and implements effective, timely solutions. Is very good at identifying the problem versus the symptom. Deals increasingly with problems that require involvement of others to solve. Has the ability to reach sound decisions quickly. Carefully evaluates alternative risks and solutions before taking action. Optimizes the use of all available resources. Results are reviewed with next level manager for clarification according to predefined objectives

Financial Awareness: Understands, has input to the budget process, and is responsible for cost-effective expense control of assigned projects. Is responsible for important and confidential information.
