The purpose of this position is to lead the underwriting and production efforts of a regional team of commercial underwriters in an assigned geography or regional sales territory. The Underwriting Team Leader is responsible for day-to-day production, underwriting quality, account management and referral authority. This position is responsible for the direction and management of up to four direct reports, including small to middle market production underwriters. The Underwriting Team Leader provides technical direction to Commercial Lines team in the interpretation of Commercial Lines underwriting policies and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, direct responsibility for new and existing business, acceptance, declination, workflow, department procedures, and proper application of corporate underwriting policies, procedures and compliance with Insurance regulations. This position will also have individual production responsibilities involving large and more complex technical accounts, as well as providing superior service to top tier independent agencies.
Sound knowledge of underwriting practice, procedures, rules and regulations is required, including knowledge of rating plans (ISO or similar) and Commercial Lines coverages. This position will correlate risk factors to underwriting standards in determining acceptance of risk within service and production standards. The Underwriting Team Leader will guide and direct a group of regional underwriters to analyze risks and develop effective underwriting solutions. Candidates will have leadership abilities, along with the desire to accomplish job responsibilities and objectives at a high level of performance. This position also deals with agency relations, production, and profitable business development. Decision making entails risk analysis and risk selection, along with analysis of agency books of business and the identification of methods to enhance CIGs position and profitable growth. Candidates for this position will be responsible for underwriting quality and integrity, underwriting staff development and technical direction. The Underwriting Team Leader will be delegated Underwriting Authority commensurate with ability and experience and may be involved in developing new business opportunities/classes of business. This position requires sound technical knowledge in the analysis of complex and/or sophisticated risks.
Education and Experience: To be considered, a Bachelors degree is preferred. However, equivalent experience in a related assignment will be considered. This position requires ongoing commitment to continuing education in insurance with completion or active participation in business relevant insurance certifications such as IIA, CPCU, or CIC. A minimum of seven years of progressively challenging commercial lines experience, writing small to medium sized middle market risks, is required. Additionally, the candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to apply sound insurance principles in a highly professional manner and manage an underwriting workload. Candidates who apply will be tested for aptitude and competency. The position also requires a minimum of two to three years in a leadership or a supervisory role, directing the efforts of a professional team to manage agency relationships, new business production and renewal underwriting.
