The Underwriter is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, evaluating, quoting both new and renewal homeowners & dwelling fire business.  In addition, they foster the growth of our agent and client relationships.  They are also responsible for maintaining a professional relationship with fellow colleagues and clients while supporting the Underwriting Department as well as all departments that interact with Underwriting.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review New Business applications for accuracy, determine if policies meet eligibility guidelines; accept, reject, and/or adjust coverage as necessary
  • Assume responsibility for incoming inquiries via phone, email, fax, etc. from Agents and Clients
  • Instruct agents on company guidelines and procedures
  • Maintain understanding of State guidelines, including available discounts, selection/rejection requirements, State specific forms, and updates to underwriting guidelines and rating factors
  • Review required documentation for policy changes, modify policies as necessary
  • Research and resolve agent service requests to conclusion, this may include communication with other units, such as, IT, accounting, and marketing
  • Utilizes internal and external resources to confirm dwelling information and characteristics are within our guidelines.
  • Develops and strengthens agent relationships and communication. 
  • Audits homeowners & dwelling policies which have been uploaded to confirm correct information and rating has been applied.
  • Processes and maintains assigned workflow in a timely manner
  • Willingly accepts other duties as assigned
  • Responsible for handling incoming calls related to, underwriting and coverages
  • Reviewing new business inspections for eligibility and compliance with our guidelines
  • Maintains positive internal and external work relationships

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and 2+ years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of insurance procedures and rules regarding the handling of residential property policies

Ability to read, write and interpret routine reports and correspondence

Proficient with Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point)

Ability to learn and use the compay policy system and imaging system

Ability to use a personal computer and standard office equipment

Ability to sit for extended periods  

Ability to work well within a team

Ability to adapt quickly and positively to changes in procedures and policies
