Senior Performance Engineer Role Description:
Communication & Leadership:
· Synthesize results from recent tests into a cohesive findings and recommendations presentation to present to performance and architecture experts as well as executive leadership · Establish relationships with engaged external vendors for knowledge exchange in areas of performance testing, diagnostics, analysis, and reporting · Present proposals and findings to sophisticated internal technical audiences and business decision makers · Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior team members
Strategy & Planning:
· Design scalability, volume, and stress tests using industry standard benchmarks and tools. · Build consensus on the accuracy and validity of performance test results in conjunction with the performance engineering team. · Review on a periodic basis the performance management methodology (delivery maturity, test approach, scenario designs, planning, tools, and analysis) to identify and address gaps. · Prepare detailed software requirements documents for custom development and diagnostic tool needs.
Oversight & Analysis:
· Review test scenarios and scripts created by Performance Test Designer for accuracy and adherence to defined test strategy · Verify that the Performance Test Coordinator has planned upcoming tests with adequate dependency checks prior to scheduling · Analyze test results to identify performance problems in complex architectures and suggest remediation strategies · Provide architecture review and implementation recommendations to developers early in product lifecycle · Review requirement capture documents, technical design documents, and delivery artifacts from multiple projects · Design and contribute to development of automated system performance measurement frameworks · Work with Development to characterize performance in unique customer environments
Skills and Qualifications:
A successful candidate will possess an advanced technical degree and a strong background (5 or more years) in technology architecture with a focus on enterprise portal applications and distributed systems.
Qualifications:
· Advanced technical degree (e.g. software engineering) · 5+ years of software development experience with a focus on high performance, such as online transaction processing systems, real-time systems, and batch architectures · 3+ years experience at code profiling and optimization · 3+ years experience with designing and implementing performance test scenarios and methods
Other Skills:
· Conveys performance information to both technical and non-technical audiences clearly and concisely · Applies logic and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot complex system defects · Identifies the performance properties of a variety of complex architectures · Identifies / resolves performance bottlenecks in complex architectures (memory leaks, concurrency / multi-threading issues) · Possesses working knowledge of Java development tools and profilers (e.g. Jprofiler, JProbe, JMeter) · Proficient in performance test design and methods · Exposure to a wide variety of enterprise technologies (Java, .Net, IIS, web services, portal, server/client, network, ERP, database). · Exposure to mainframe is a plus. · Expert understanding of throughput, latency, memory and CPU utilization. Working knowledge of database tuning and administration · JBoss administration / setup and tuning experience (JMX experience desirable) · Run-time JVM optimization knowledge · Understanding of underlying OS tuning techniques · Application redundancy design for performance using vertical and horizontal scaling · Disaster recovery design knowledge · Web application server and OS monitoring knowledge
