The mission of Market Development is to expand the size and reach of Travelers global franchise by partnering with the businesses to identify and develop profitable growth initiatives. Market Development generates, explores and develops ideas primarily for new markets, but also products and/or services. Market Development is focused on proactively identifying and analyzing important new development opportunities for the enterprise, exploring opportunities for expansion within current industry or line of business positions, and challenging existing biases.
RESPONSIBILITIES - Provides leadership to market development unit, including input into strategic direction; identifies potential development opportunities for the company; participates in or provides leadership to cross functional enterprise projects to research, evaluate and make recommendations around strategic market, product and service opportunities; may mentor or formally supervise lower level staff. - Applies extensive knowledge of research principles and concepts and insurance operations and industry dynamics, and regularly participates in collecting and analyzing data, engaging colleagues in Market Research as appropriate, to identify and assess internal capabilities in particular areas as well as the impact of and opportunity associated with near-term and long-term market trends, potential market entries, disruptive and competitive forces, and other growth initiatives. - Presents insightful & well developed presentations and recommendations to management on development initiatives based on relevant internal and external research and analysis; regularly makes presentations to senior management on project findings and recommendations. - Collaborates with management from sales, product, actuarial, and underwriting or colleagues from Market Research to identify and assess market development opportunities.
COMPETENCIES - Ability to carry significant, large, and simultaneous projects to fruition, often over the course of several months - Ability to effectively manage conflict as well as communicate with and influence the highest levels of senior management - Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills - Advanced research and analysis skills - Strong project management skills - Insight and creativity in problem solving and ability to research and assess data from multiple viewpoints - Solid leadership and management skills - Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint
TYPICAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS - 8 years industry experience, usually graduate degree in marketing, mathematics, or similarly quantitative discipline, or equivalent experience - 3-5 years management experience - Management consulting experience is helpful - Functional mastery of research principles & practices & of market research field - Expert knowledge of insurance practices/ procedures & business line specific products - Underwriting experience preferred - Knowledge of finance preferred
