Responsibilities:
Manage a team of 12 to 15 associate underwriters in delivering timely, high quality and profitable products and services to customers. Hires and develops staff to meet changing business needs.
Delegates authority to associate underwriters in accordance with AM AU authority guidelines. Assigns underwriting territories in accordance with the individual';s experience and the complexity and sophistication of the book of business Assures team works within delegated authority levels and company guidelines while modifying new and renewal business, to ensure a profitable book of business.
Identifies and participates in initiatives to improve team or regional performance.
Develops on-going relationships with agents and keeps agents and team members up-to-date with underwriting and/or product changes.
Monitors the book of business assigned to the team to maximize profitability and growth and to ensure that pricing guidelines and standards for timeliness are being met. Reviews loss activity (frequency and severity) for agents, and for each underwriter in team';s territory. Considers mix of business, loss ratios by line of business, fit of business with company guidelines. Through the use of company programs, identifies problems, follows up with agents and underwriters.
Prepares and manages the annual team budget to ensure that financial targets and expense goals are met.
Defends bad faith claims by testifying in court on procedural and regulatory processing of policies. Prepares correspondence in response to Department of Insurance complaints.
Trains, coaches and serves as technical resource to other underwriters and associate underwriters. Develops programs to train new associate underwriters and manages new associate underwriter development regarding expertise on our products, processes, underwriting policies and standards, etc. Assists associate underwriters in the handling of high hazard or more complex accounts.
Performs other duties as assigned.
SKILLS REQUIRED Qualifications:
Bachelor';s degree or equivalent plus 5+ years of progressively more responsible related work experience is required
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills in order to work with diverse groups of internal and external contacts
Proven organizational and problem solving skills and the ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously
Project management skills
In-depth knowledge of complex rating plans and detailed knowledge of underwriting, rating and production support operations
CPCU/AU/AIPU designation a plus
