Summary of Role:

Under general direction, supervises the investigation, management, & timely disposition of claims within account, carrier and/or company guidelines, & assists the Service Center Manager in managing the branch claim office.


Responsibilities:

  • Makes every reasonable effort to select, train & develop qualified minorities & women in support of the Company's Affirmative Action Program.
  • Establishes & communicates performance standards & objectives, conducts performance appraisals.
  • Recommends/approves salary adjustments, promotions, transfers & dismissals.
  • Monitors operations & staff & recommends, when necessary, changes in methods, procedures, structure, & additions or changes in personnel to secure optimum utilization of resources.
  • Counsels team members on educational & job opportunities which will enhance their career development, & keeps staff informed of current problems, changes, & new developments in the department & company by conducting periodic meetings.
  • Administers all company human resources policies & procedures, communicates to staff, interprets as necessary, & ensures compliance.
  • Installs and/or monitors the approved Corporate Productivity and/or Work Management Program, reports on productivity trends, & recommends & implements changes on an ongoing basis to improve productivity. 
  • Reviews, analyzes, & assigns losses to the appropriate claim technician with directives. 
  • Reviews files on a periodic basis to determine accuracy & completeness &, if required, issues directives for further investigation, evaluation, negotiation, contributions from other parties, subrogation, arbitration and/or contact with legal channels.
  • Monitors the accuracy, completeness, & the appropriateness of billings (e.g. legal, medical, appraisal) when reviewing claim files.
  • Reviews reserve recommendations, establishes reserves & makes recommendations on reserves exceeding authority. 
  • Controls expenses to meet the Branch Claim budget, & keeps expenditures to a minimum. 
  • Provides the necessary guidance to unit personnel on investigations, appraisals of damages, liability, coverages, & settlement techniques. 
  • Extends settlement authority as warranted and/or investigates & settles difficult cases as required or requested to assure proper investigation & disposition of all cases. 
  • Assists in establishing Branch Claim office objectives supportive of Home Office Claim & corporate objectives.
  • Provides assistance in the selection & evaluation of vendors (i.e., defense attorneys, medical examiners, independent adjusters, & auto appraisers).
  • Reviews & assists in preparing suit cases for forwarding to legal counsel, checking to assure that coverages are not exceeded & legal reserves are adequate & confers with attorneys regarding these matters.
  • Attends trials, settlement conferences, mediations, & arbitrations, as required.
  • Assists in the preparation of account, carrier or broker reviews.
  • Services TPA accounts as required.
  • Operates, inputs & retrieves information using the Focus System & Claim Workstation. Requests checks, form letters & other correspondence through the Focus System & Claim Workstation.
  • Organizes workflows of the Focus System & Claim Workstation to provide maximum productivity.
  • May assist in the training of staff in the operation & uses of the automated Focus System & Claim Workstation.


Education:

  • Education equivalent to graduation from college or the equivalent in related work experience.
  • Attainment of the Associate in Claims designation, & successful completion of, or active study for, I.I.A. MGT 41, MGT 42, SM18 & SM19, or the equivalent in related studies or work experience.
Experience:
  • Five (5) or more years of progressive experience as a Claim Technician, or the equivalent, demonstrating the technical expertise to handle the most complex cases with a high degree of judgment & discretion.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Demonstrates effective & diplomatic oral & written communication skills.
