Director of Individual Disability Underwriting


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Perform Facultative Underwriting.
• Complete the facultative review of disability underwriting files submitted by our clients within our service standards
• Develop strong working relationship with all client companies.

2. Determine and Maintain Quality Underwriting Standards
• Work with JHA underwriting team and Medical resources to ensure JHA’s underwriting guidelines are updated appropriately.
• Maintain knowledge of underwriting rules across the industry.
• Understand and appropriately address the potential impact to JHA and its clients of changes in medical practices and competitors underwriting rules.
• Identify medical, financial and multi-life underwriting guidelines to reflect changes in industry standards, knowledge, medical practices and tax laws.

3. Manage Underwriting Relationships with Client Companies
• Perform detailed underwriting reviews of all clients and prospects.
• Support development and growth of client company’s underwriters.



Skills & Abilities
1. Strong Risk Management
• Strong technical underwriting skills- Proven ability to evaluate the financial and medical information to determine the most appropriate underwriting offer.
• Marketplace knowledge – Able to understand the impact of product form, riders, distribution, regulation, claim management and pricing have on underwriting rules and decisions.
• Minimum of five years of individual disability underwriting experience.
• Working knowledge of multi-life disability underwriting, preferred.
2. Effective Interpersonal and Communication Skills
• Able to effectively communicate with management and underwriting personnel of client companies.
• Proven presentation and training abilities.
3. Flexibility to travel 3 to 4 days per month.
4. Ability to work as a member of a team and independently.
