Position: Chief Actuary ¿ Oil and Gas ¿ Middle Market Actuarial Business Unit Analytics and Execution
Summary
This position provides a challenging and exciting leadership opportunity in the Middle Market Actuarial organization. Middle Market is a significant portion of the Travelers Business Insurance organization and is comprised of 7 distinct businesses with gross premium in excess of $5 billion. The business directly supported by this position represents more than $400M of gross premium.
This position is a leadership role and reports to one of two Middle Market Business Unit VP-Actuaries. The position requires a close working relationship with the Business Unit (BU) underwriting leaders and their management team for the Technology Middle Market Business. It will also require frequent interactions with the actuarial managers across Middle Market actuarial, including members of the Loss Analytics, Product & Innovation, and Data & Infrastructure teams.
The BU Actuarial leadership role is a key position in the Travelers Middle Market Actuarial organization. This is a business-focused position requiring strong leadership, critical and strategic thinking, relationship management and business acumen skills. The position includes supervision of a team of 3-4 actuaries / analysts.
Responsibilities
¿ Work with staff to perform Business Unit analytics, monitor performance, support large account pricing, and ensure execution of strategic goals. This includes evaluation of pricing results and coordinating with Finance to communicate results in an operating review environment. It also includes partnering with the Middle Market Loss Analytics team to understand and react to underlying trends in loss ratio performance. Financial Planning and reforecasting is also a key component of the position.
¿ Ensure successful completion of BU-specific actuarial key projects and initiatives, retaining support from Middle Market or Business Insurance shared resources as necessary. Examples include enhancements to pricing models and tools, maintenance of rating plans, etc.
¿ Work closely with members of the BU management team to formulate strategy and manage implementation of business initiatives.
¿ In the interest of AE effectiveness, work with BU management to seek opportunities for enhanced operational effectiveness, particularly with regard to pricing tools, and partner in implementation.
¿ Represent Business Units in broad strategic discussions and prioritization across actuarial. Collaborate with Middle Market Loss Analytics, Product, and Development & Infrastructure actuarial teams to set priorities and achieve target results.
¿ Build a qualified and effective actuarial team, and support the individual development of its members.
Qualifications
¿ Strong leadership, strategic and critical thinking, and relationship management skills.
¿ Highly developed analytical and problem solving skills. Able to perform credible analyses using sound judgment and reasoning to draw conclusions leading to the selection of the best solution from a review of strategic alternatives.
¿ Work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
¿ Collaborate effectively with multiple counterparts in multiple locations.
¿ Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to present subjects clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

¿ Well-organized and detailed-oriented.
¿ Five years or more of actuarial experience, including business unit support.
¿ Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society.
