Medical Malpractice/Professional Liability Sr. Referral Underwriter
General Re, a leading global reinsurer and a member of the Berkshire Hathaway family of companies, has an excellent opportunity for a Medical Malpractice/Professional Liability Sr. Referral Underwriter in its General Star Management Company. General Star underwrites excess, surplus and specialty property and casualty insurance on an admitted and non admitted basis through appointed wholesale brokers.
The Senior Referral Underwriter provides underwriting oversight on the field offices largest or most complex accounts or books of business, oversight responsibility will assist in compliance with underwriting standards and providing input in deal structure. This is also done through management of the underwriting audit process. In addition, the Senior Referral Underwriter will assist in mentoring and skill development through account/book dialogue.
PRIOR EXPERIENCE 7 to 10 years of underwriting experience in medical malpractice and professional liability. Recognized solid mentoring capabilities. Solid knowledge of insurance company operations and insurance industry including wholesale and retail distribution channels. Knowledge of insurance contracts.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES Shared responsibility for underwriting profitability of referred business. Assist in managing results through proactive input on necessary pricing, structure, terms and risk assumption requirements. Timely handling of referrals. Underwriting audits to include consistency, timely reporting and necessary follow-up. Senior technician in the area of risk assessment and deal structuring. In-depth knowledge of specific line of business for which accountable. Ability to read, interpret and explain rate studies and rate development. High level communication skills, both written and oral, as well as solid presentation capabilities. Understanding of regulatory and compliance issues on the lines of business handled. Ability to participate in or lead underwriting related projects. Through effective influence and council, successfully lead underwriters in making sound underwriting decisions. Promote effective problem solving in response to unique and unusual underwriting situations. Ability to read, discuss and respond to profitability related management reports. Have interest in and track industry trends that impact our business. Look for and assist in process redesign and improvement. Understand coding and IT requirements/limitations. Clear and objective communication and documentation skills. Appropriate working relationship with Division Managers, branch underwriters, key claims examiners and other associates. Stays abreast of industry and environmental changes impacting our business. Acts as senior representative for the Company. Working with differing personalities and skill set levels. Participate in tasks that support the organization but divert one from day-to-day responsibilities. For instance, participate or lead special projects, assist in mentoring, present at training events, etc. Ability to maintain objectivity and deliver difficult messages while maintaining an on-going working relationships. Effectively build/share knowledge of all Divisions throughout the Company as a way to build greater understanding and unity across organizations.
