General Summary: The Regional Underwriting Director (RUD) is responsible for execution of the underwriting function within their assigned Underwriting Center(s). This position holds the highest level of underwriting authority in the field and is responsible for delegating authority to the field employees based on individual experience and expertise. The RUD is responsible for oversight of the Underwriting Quality process conducted by others within the Field organization. The role supports the development and consistent implementation of Select underwriting strategies. The RUD reports directly to the Second Vice President of Underwriting in Home Office, with a matrix reporting relationship with the Second Vice President Underwriting, Select Underwriting Center. To assure full understanding of the Underwriting Center and its needs, the RUD role will reside within assigned Underwriting Center.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Resource for collaboration on more technically challenging accounts. On a transactional basis, review and sign off on business referred due to coverage, limits, size or hazard. In collaboration with Home Office Underwriting and Product Development, define underwriting appetite (including automated business rule development) by segment, line of business and geography. Provide Regional and State specific information relative to the legal, regulatory, catastrophe (natural and otherwise), and business environment within the Region. Develop and implement specific program, segment, and line of business strategies in conjunction with Home Office Underwriting and Product Development, Express Product Management, Operations and Actuarial. Partner with Home Office Product & Underwriting, Actuarial and Express Product Management in the rate making process. Oversee Underwriting Controls within the Region Monitor and evaluate the Quality/Self Assessment Process. Perform independent evaluation to insure the integrity of the process and provide analysis of findings to RVP and Home Office Underwriting. Analysis and review of Ex-Gratia, and Reformation Requests Participate in field performance reviews within assigned region, and provide support to other regions as requested. Implement CAT underwriting strategies and manage CAT capacity within assigned region. Identify training needs through analysis of underwriting execution and field performance reviews. In collaboration with the Select Training Unit, develop and deliver technical training. Complete special projects as assigned by Home Office Underwriting. Mentor Regional staff in the area of underwriting performance at the direction of the 2VP Underwriting, Select Underwriting and support of the Underwriting Director. Monitor regional performance in areas of regulatory, compliance, and strategic issues. Build partnerships with other business groups and identifies and delivers agency solutions and product solutions at the account level. Maintain an understanding of Travelers products, services and solutions and initiates discussions with other business units as appropriate.
SELECT REGIONAL UNDERWRITING DIRECTOR
Qualifications: Minimum 12 years Commercial Lines underwriting experience; expertise across all lines of business. CPCU, ARM or related professional designation; or working towards designation desired. College Degree or equivalent experience. Two years supervisory/management experience preferred. Extensive knowledge of product, operations, and agency distribution. Willing/able to travel to Home Office (Hartford) as business needs require.
