We currently have an opening for anUnderwriting Consultant position with our OneBeacon Professional Partnersteam.  The underwriting team is based in Avon, CT, however wewill consider a remote location.  This position is responsible for the underwriting of complex accounts andmanagement of assigned broker relationships, and senior level customerrelationships with key decision makers with each assigned firm.  Also responsible for broker developmentplans regarding submission activity, bound new business and renewal retentionstrategies.   Significantunderwriting authority is granted to people who possess the requisite knowledgeand background, and know when not to use their authority. 

Complex Risks underwrites primary, lead excess and capacity excesshospital business and physician group practices, along with any health care riskwhich requires a complex business solution.  As a result this group handles insurance and reinsurancetransactions, and an ability to offer fronting and loss sensitive programstructures for a diverse group of health care clients, focused primarily onprofessional liability, but offering other coverages as well through theOneBeacon Insurance assemblage of product offerings.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Underwrites assignedaccounts within underwriting guidelines and presents recommendations toroundtable committee.  Accounts mayinclude financially distressed accounts, mergers and acquisitions, initial andsecondary offerings, and outstanding claims.
  • Rates each underwrittenaccount utilizing the rating plan and makes pricing recommendations toroundtable committee
  • Manages assigned brokerrelationships and establishes senior level contacts via travel to brokerlocations, client meetings, and industry conferences
  • Mentors less experiencedunderwriters and assistants. Provides underwriting guidance and training, negotiations skills trainingand guides broker development.
  • Monitors competitive andlegal environment through broker discussions, industry conference participation,and consultation with OBPP claims personnel and monitoring counsel.

Requirements:

 

  • Highly complex underwritingand financial analysis skills are required.  Position requires an in-depth knowledge of corporatefinancial statements (balance sheet, cash flow statement, income statement, 10K,10Q, proxy statements, notes associated with each statement, etc.) as well asknowledge of assigned business segment.
  • Knowledge of claim legalenvironment and the impact of new and existing legislation on the product.
  • In-depth knowledge ofcontract terms and conditions associated with assigned product(s).
  • Strong analytical andproblem solving skills.
  • Excellent teamwork andcommunications skills for internal as well as broker development purposes.
  • Working knowledge ofMicrosoft Office in order to access and utilize underwriting documents.

 Educationand Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’sdegree.  5-7 years professionalliability underwriting experience or equivalent education/experience.
  • Professional insurancedesignation is preferred (e.g., RPLU designation).
