SUMMARY:
Assist staff attorneys in the preparation and trial of lawsuits and Workers'' Compensation matters. Interview and take statements from witnesses and clients. Conduct routine factual investigation. Locate, organize and digest various records and complex information. Draft correspondence and legal documents. Assist in the trial of cases by scheduling witnesses and preparing and organizing exhibits, documents and charts. Serve and file various legal documents. May conduct basic legal and medical research.
PRIMARY DUTIES: Draft letters to attorneys, clients, witnesses and adverse parties for his/her own signature or signature of staff attorney.
Draft for staff attorney''s signature various basic pleadings, such as complaints, answers, discovery requests and responses, motions, affidavits and subpoenas.
Assist staff attorneys in developing facts and information by visiting accident scenes, establishing contact with witnesses and experts, conducting personal or telephone interviews and preparing interview summary, taking statements from clients and witnesses, and using other investigative methods as directed by staff attorneys to obtain sufficient information to respond to discovery requests.
Obtain, review, organize, index and summarize medical records. Summarize and index deposition transcripts.
Review and organize the insured''s documents for production to opposing attorneys and the documents produced by opposing parties in response to discovery requests.
Prepare documents, exhibits and other demonstrative evidence for trial.
Personally serve and/or file legal papers when necessary.
Obtain copies of court cases, statutes, law review articles and other legal references as requested by staff attorneys. May research basic legal issues and draft legal opinions for staff attorneys. Utilize on-line systems (Internet) for research.
Assist staff attorneys in preparing for and taking depositions by organizing relevant documentation for specific areas of inquiry and providing lists of possible questions to pose to the witness.
EDUCATION/COURSE OF STUDY:
Must be certified through an accredited paralegal training program - generally a two-year degree.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
One and one-half to two years of paralegal work experience is preferred with a law firm or corporate legal department, have investigative experience for a similar time period with the government or the insurance industry, or have had other similar relevant responsible work experience.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Must have sufficient interpersonal skills to conduct interviews and investigations and communicate with other attorneys, judges and court personnel.
OTHER:
Must have excellent organization skills.
Must have excellent drafting skills and knowledge of manual and computerized legal research, including on-line systems.
Must be resourceful, thorough and analytical in order to develop the facts of the case by obtaining relevant material and competent evidence suited to the objectives determined by staff attorneys.
Must maintain composure and professionalism under pressure.
Must be aware of importance of maintaining strict confidentiality with respect to information learned as a result of involvement with litigation being handled by staff counsel.
Dimensions
Position was designed to contribute to reduction of outside legal expense. Position provides support for two to twenty attorneys.
