SUMMARY:
Conducts quality investigations to assist and further the efforts of the Specialty Investigations Group. Provide investigative expertise to limit losses and protect company assets.  These investigations concentrate primarily on Inland Marine, Ocean Marine, Northland and Select programs. Efforts revolve around recovery, coverage and liability investigations. Investigate claims, identify and evaluate risks, perform surveys and inspections, make sound recommendations for improvement, and effectively report findings to appropriate staff.   Participates in training opportunities to enhance/develop engineering, underwriting, investigations and produce/service knowledge.  The incumbent is supported by a more experienced staff member in the identification and evaluation of risks and in the development of Risk Control recommendations. Provides technical advice and account information to underwriting business partners for risk assessment and analysis.  Works on complex accounts for all lines.  Markets Travelers and helps sell the deal to the customers.

PRIMARY DUTIES:
Conducts investigations with a focus on thoroughness, quality, with attention to detail, timeliness and cost control. Conducts claims occurrence investigations by determining the objects involved elements of the accident, cause of loss, scope and cost of damage, preventive measures and report findings to appropriate staff and insured so that an informed decision can be made to mitigate the loss.

Prepares and submits investigative reports covering all phases of the investigation in each case.  Assists with the development and training of the claim staff in the detection of appropriate referrals. Identify the cause of the claim, the cost and the remedial action(s) taken and planned.  Assist the insured and the Claim Division in bringing about an equitable settlement (if covered).

Perform loss control surveys which identify key objects, evaluate risk, and develop Risk Control recommendations and report findings necessary for to determine insurability and/or maintaining profitability.

Conduct risk evaluations (e.g., description of the operation, key objects, bottlenecks and general conditions) and report findings of probable exposures and/or unexpected risk to appropriate staff (e.g., Account Executives, Marketing Executives).

Manage workload within an assigned territory by utilizing all available resources; knowing the territory; effectively prioritizing/planning/scheduling and accounting for work; maintaining the data base; providing management information; and, responding to customer needs.

Work with the marketing/underwriting staff to ensure engineering service requirements are met for specific accounts.

Interprets and conveys highly technical information to others.

Applies rules of evidence; recognizes evidence and determines its value to specific claim, evidence collection and interpretation for investigations.  Requires clear understanding of the rules of evidence.

Establishes and maintains liaison with public officials, law enforcement officers and others to obtain assistance in conducting investigations.

Knowledgeable about all applicable fraud statutes: local, state and federal to ensure duties and assignments are carried out within the requirements of applicable law and local office expectations.

High degree of integrity and confidentiality required handling information that is considered personal and confidential.

Customer Service and relationship/team building by maintaining contact during the course of investigations with company''s claim services, Marketing and Underwriting colleagues, claimants, policyholders, agents, counterparts in other firms, external legal professionals, external medical professionals, financial institutions, government/regulatory agencies, potential customers and vendors and suppliers.

Assists unit in developing a network of resources within the community (e.g., local cargo task forces, district attorneys offices, law enforcement agencies, insurance associations, professional associations, and community groups).

Serve as resource to Account Executive in development of the deal.  Market Travelers to the client to help sell the deal.

Consult with clients on ways to control hazards in order to reduce or prevent losses.  Consistently influences clients to implement recommendations.

Conduct research for underwriters or clients on class of business, operations, unique or unidentified exposures, or any other technical subject requiring similar analysis.

Analyze loss trends, recognize opportunities to provide risk control products and/or services which can help reduce losses.  Explain how their recommendations or products can help minimize losses.

Requires overnight travel.
Conducts recovery investigative efforts
Conducts Telephonic Investigative efforts

EDUCATION/COURSE OF STUDY:
College degree or equivalent Claim / SIU experience.
Bi-Lingual - not required, however a benefit for consideration for this job. 

WORK EXPERIENCE:
Basic working level knowledge of insurance and claim operations, commercial, personal, and Workers Compensation insurance products and litigation management.
Cargo, Heavy Equipment, Boat/ Yacht experience a plus

OTHER:
Interviewing skills.
Analytical skills and ability to make deductions; logical and sequential thinker
Computer literate; database and Internet proficient.
Knowledge of available resources (internal and external) to assist in investigations, surveys and evaluations
Conflict management skills to deal with crisis situations, hostile witnesses, etc.

Quality of Investigation (efficiency rate and QA score)
