We currently have an opening for an Underwriting Consultant to join our Commercial Lines Middle Market team in San. Francisco, California.
Primary responsibility is new business development for the San. Francisco and Seattle/Portland territory. Individual will also manage a book of business of monoline property and inland marine accounts. Provides underwriting, technical support, and service to assigned agents. Under limited direction, underwrites risk regarding selection and rejection of new and renewal business. Analyzes quality and quantity of risks written and prepares reports accordingly. Monitors and evaluates results of assigned agents and assigned territory. Recommends and implements action plans for improvement of underwriting results for assigned agents and assigned territory. Viewed as a senior resource in a given unit. Acts as a coach and mentor to junior members of the department.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Manages profitable agency relationships by evaluating results and conducting portfolio reviews for assigned territory and individual agencies, developing integrated pictures of factors that affect profitability and growth and recommending, implementing, and monitoring necessary action plans. Participates in producer reviews and implements resulting action plans. 2. Examines, identifies, and evaluates exposures by analyzing documentation from various sources (e.g. application, inspection reports, credit reports, etc.) and makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks with assigned territory. Implements underwriting decisions in compliance with state laws. 3. Develops superior working relationships with agents, and with internal and external partners, to successfully promote achievement of mutual operating goals and to supply the appropriate products and services. 4. Processes underwriting decisions and documents files and reports via automated desktop systems and tools. 5. Gathers and analyzes competitor information and agent specific reports on assigned agents'' new business flow, retention, profitability and potential, to support territorial rate reviews. Works with territorial manager to determine and make recommendations for the rate review and to improve products, systems, etc. 6. Collaborates with team members to manage work inventories and all production activities to provide accurate and timely service in accordance with corporate standards.
Requirements: Must be production-focused with the ability to prepare and execute new business marketing plans for assigned producers and assigned lines of business. Must be able to identify and describe the major perils insured under monoline property and inland marine policies. Must be able to identify and describe the exposures and hazards to consider in making an underwriting decision. Must know how to obtain information needed to make an underwriting decision. Must have proven analytical, decision making, problem-solving, communication, organization, and teamwork skills. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite. Must be able to act as a coach to junior team members on all of the above.
Education and Experience Preferred: 7+ years of progressively complex experience. Bachelor''s degree preferred, but exceptions are made.
