SUMMARY:
Works in a team environment with a senior level account executive and management.   It is responsible for processing environmental claims by performing data input, file maintenance and issuance of claim payments within authority levels.  May perform various unit/office support functions.

PRIMARY DUTIES:
Prepare and maintain claim files.  Set up new files, input changes and file updates at the request of Account Executive (e.g. change adjuster estimates, number of years claim payments are to be spread over, etc.). Research and input claim corrections (e.g. misspelled policyholder/ claimant name, incorrect causative agent code, etc.).  Close or reopen claims in the system.  Assures accuracy.

Retrieve claim files as requested.  Photocopy, file and maintain claim file paperwork.

Maintain claim counts and activity records (# claims opened, closed, changed, etc.). Assist in monthly reporting of claim volume and inventory projects.

Issue claim payments and credit memoranda via the computer or manually.  Have input authority for system generated payments up to $10,000 without specific approval.  System payments over $10,000 and manual/multipay payments issued require separate higher input approval.

Perform various unit/office support functions such as provide telephone coverage; transcribe letters, memos, statements and interviews from prerecorded sources; and sort, match and distribute incoming mail/faxes.

WORK EXPERIENCE:
Entry level claim processing position.  A newly hired Claim Processor is generally in training for the first 3 to 6 months.  During that time the Claim Processor performs work under close supervision from a Senior Claim Processor or Claim Analyst/Senior Claim Analyst.  The Claim Processor''s work schedule is highly structured and decision making autonomy limited.  Claims processed tend to be routine in nature and limited in complexity.  Typically, a Claim Processor performs solely claim processing functions and is not assigned other unit/office support duties such as telephone, mail/fax distribution or transcription duties.  Claim Processors are generally in the position for 2 to 3 years before their skill levels and ability to work independently warrant promotion to the Senior Claim Processor position.

COMPUTER SKILLS:
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel.

OTHER:
Proficiency in data entry/typing.
Good customer service, attention to detail, communication and organizational skills.
Ability to take direction and work independently or as part of a group.
  Teamwork
Builds and maintains successful relationships with peers, managers, project leaders, etc.
Works effectively with all levels.
  Business Knowledge
Working knowledge of claim systems used (i.e. CPCS, CARMA, ALPHA, etc.).
  Technical Expertise
Excellent data entry skills.
Thorough understanding of PC hardware/software utilized (i.e. Microsoft Word/Excel, etc.).
  Analytical Skills
Ability to recognize and correct claim data errors, payment errors, etc. in a timely fashion.
Strong attention to detail.
  Communication
Good basic communications skills are required to receive and follow instructions, respond to inquiries and work well with others on group projects.
