Job Summary
Under general supervision, this position provides high quality, cost-effective coverage advice, coverage litigation management and other legal services concerning the general liability product line to Claim, as well as Underwriting and other business units within Travelers. Researches and prepares coverage opinions on a wide variety of general liability issues, as well as intersection of liability and other coverages. Represents and/or participates on behalf of the Company in mediations, arbitrations, settlement conferences and other alternative dispute resolution forums in coverage-related disputes. Directs and manages outside counsel with respect to coverage litigation involving the Company, as well as other selected matters. May supervise legal support staff (non-attorneys).

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
(May include all or the majority but not limited to these components.) Provides high quality, cost effective legal advice and recommendations for action to business clients regarding moderately complex to complex matters which have or may have a dollar impact on business activities and operations. Researches legal principles and precedents within area of specialization or expertise. Identifies unique issues in assigned matters and recommends appropriate responses to those issues. Proactively identifies and communicates risk to internal and/or external customers and provides recommendations on how to mitigate that risk. Responsible for managing outside counsel and advising senior business clients on financially significant and complex matters. Drafts, negotiates and executes legal documents. Maintains awareness of judicial climate and provides legal updates to clients on case law and legislative developments. May act as mentor and coach to less senior attorneys, paralegal/staff; explains issues, ideas and concepts that are incorporated into work assignments. Makes effective use of technology and automation in the practice of law. Ensures timely submission of high-quality work product as required. Coverage/Litigation Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities: Prepares coverage opinions, case updates, analysis and reports, litigation plans, case evaluations, legal research, and other required items in a timely manner. Provides thorough accurate and timely analysis of coverage questions, policy forms, and other legal matters. Directs coverage litigation involving Travelers and manages outside coverage counsel and legal expenditures. Determine appropriate action on litigation; provide advice on possible outcomes, awards and settlements. Reviews and approves invoices for retained counsel to ensure appropriate expenses incurred and compliance with corporate retention agreement. Prepare and/or review defense positions and legal strategies, engaging and managing counsel as required. Achieves desired results through effective analysis, legal research, advocacy and use of the litigation process. Prepare and/or review motions, briefs, pleadings, legal documents, correspondence, and memoranda to identify and protect legal interests of the company and/or its insureds. Proposes, prepares and responds to and evaluates oral and written discovery. Collaborates and works effectively with others in the Claim Legal organization, and with Claim, Underwriting, and other areas of the company, to achieve results and to identify and resolve issues. Communicates effectively with clients, outside counsel and others, and consistently exhibits strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrates expertise with respect to both liability and coverage issues and continuously makes efforts to expand knowledge and skill set. Claim Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities: Provides recommendations and case analysis to all business partners on appropriate file handling strategy. Completes all required administrative tasks including time reporting, closed cases reports and other materials appropriate to performance of job duties. Adheres to all standards of excellence in file management. Has frequent independent contact with clients. Provides prompt and appropriate communication to Claim and Underwriting clients. Achieves positive client feedback. Values and develops true partnership with clients and colleagues. Develops, conducts and participates in training and seminars as needed. Approaches disputes and issues with a relentless resolution focus, as well as creative and strategic thinking. Other duties as assigned.

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
Juris Doctorate; graduate of an accredited law school. Typically has 6 to10 years of prior legal experience.
