This position handles complex casualty commercial lines claims of high dollar value and litigated claims. These claims will often involve complex coverage, liability and damage issues. The successful candidate will ensure the claims are investigated, evaluated and reserved appropriately (and also documented appropriately) and that the claims are moving towards a timely and reasonable resolution.


1. Provide superior customer service to our:
a. agency partners;
b. business partners;
c. policyholders; and
d. other insureds and claimants.
2. Investigate, evaluate and establish appropriate reserves in a timely manner for all commercial lines casualty claims assigned to the handler.
3. Ensure the commercial lines casualty claims assigned to the handler (both in litigation and not) are resolved in a timely and reasonable manner.
4. Identify and utilize vendors with the appropriate skill sets for the situation and effectively manage the vendors to achieve satisfactory results on both expense and indemnity costs.
5. Manage the expenses associated with any assigned claim to achieve satisfactory results on both expense and indemnity costs.
6. Maintains electronic records that accurately and thoroughly document all file handling activity.
7. Overnight travel will be required occasionally including but not limited to attendance at mediations, trials, etc.
8. May be called upon to perform additional duties as directed.
Minimum Experience / Education:

• 7 years or more claims handling experience preferred.
• High school degree or equivalent; college degree preferred.
• Insurance designation preferred.
• Basic computer skills and Microsoft applications.

In states where required, obtains and maintains necessary adjuster licensing.

Professional oral and written communication skills are critical to the success of this position. All claims service must be handled with tact, diplomacy and courtesy at all times. Must create documents that are technically correct and in compliance with State Auto's guidelines.

Must be able to collaborate and develop strong team relationships with associates from within and outside the Claims Department.

Technical Knowledge:
Must have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of insurance policies, including personal and commercial auto policies and various commercial general liability policies. Must have the ability to read and understand complex documents such as medical reports, contracts and other legal documents.
