Assistant Underwriter (Contract Team) Western World Insurance Group – Scottsdale, AZ Western World is a specialty insurance company dealing in many phases of high risk commercial insurance coverages, underwriting classes of business not easily placed in standard markets due to complexity, high hazard or unusual nature. We have an opening for a full-time Assistant Underwriter to join our Contract team in our Scottsdale, Arizona office. The Assistant Underwriter will train with the underwriters to learn basic underwriting techniques. This position will also be responsible for review of new business and renewal of existing business in the underwriting department in addition to handling routine underwriting issues on a daily basis. Responsibilities: • Understand company underwriting and rating guidelines and apply guidelines to a variety of business situations. • Advanced computer skills to research accounts as well as the ability to create reports. • Communicate directly with our agents and/or brokers on a daily basis regarding change requests, audits, accounting issues and general questions. • Assist all underwriting staff as necessary. • Review of and handling of new business, renewal business and endorsements as directed by the underwriter within appropriate authority as outlined in Authority Letter. • Review of inspections, audits and claims files to develop sound underwriting approaches and decisions. Experience & Qualifications: • Position requires an understanding of underwriting concepts and technical ability. • A demonstration of professionalism through good written and verbal skills. • Good knowledge of use of computers with emphasis on AS400, Lotus Notes, Cognos, ImageRight, etc. • One to two years of college or business school preferred. • Insurance related courses such as INS 21, 22 and 23 required. • At least one year of prior exposure to insurance underwriting.
