As a Multi Peril Underwriter, you will be primarily responsible for assisting in the achievement of the strategic and operating plans for profit, production, and service. Desirable candidates will be able to effectively:

  • Review and price commercial Property insurance submissions. This includes reviewing submissions in order to decline/quote within the parameters of policy coverages, state regulations, National Interstate's underwriting philosophy, and delegated authority.

  • Review and act upon risk information reports such as loss control reports, ISO or similar reporting services, loss runs and financial statements.

  • Monitor the assigned accounts waiting to be quoted so that all quotes are released to the Marketing Department by the date needed, provided Marketing has given adequate lead time.

  • Obtain critical underwriting information from Marketing within specified time standards or, in cases of noncompliance, send a notice of cancellation.

  • Place facultative reinsurance when authorized and required.

  • Prepare information for policy issue, and review the final policy for accuracy.

  • For each claim with an incurred loss of $50,000 or more, review Claims' large loss report and write a brief report including the actual account vs. expected frequency, claim patterns, and any recommendations.

  • Work cooperatively with Underwriting, Marketing, Claims and Accounting staff so that excellent service is provided to customers.

  • Review all quotes, outside of any authority level, with supervisor prior to releasing.

  • Maintain department training manuals and underwriting guides.

  • Play a key role in training and developing new underwriting staff members.

  • Develop and suggest improvements to department and product guidelines, methodologies, and processes.

  • Serve as a valuable resource to other departments by demonstrating expertise of underwriting.

  • Execute ad hoc duties and requests as assigned

    Skills and assets that we are looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree from a four year college or university

  • Minimum of 9 years of P/C underwriting experience or a minimum of 5 years of Commercial Property underwriting experience, ability to underwrite Crime and Inland Marine coverages is a plus

  • CPCU, ARM, CIC or other designation related to commercial insurance (or progressing toward such designation), or a combination of advanced commercial insurance education and experience

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as contracts and procedure manuals

  • Exceptional data analysis and critical thinking skills

  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication talent

  • Ability to speak effectively before management and in group settings

  • Advanced competency in the use of the ISO Commercial Lines Manual in relation to commercial Property rating and underwriting

  • Experience with rating, including, but not limited to, the functions of loss costs, loss cost multipliers, deductible credits, and Individual Risk Premium Modifications (IRPM)

  • Working knowledge of PCs, Microsoft Office Products, and Microsoft Outlook
