General Summary

Works with the Account Executive forming a team that develops, underwrites and services commercial business in accordance with established guidelines. . May also be assigned primary underwriting responsibility for specific agencies where the services of an account executive are not needed and/or cost-effective. Along with solid underwriting skills, this position is sales and service oriented and must be able to develop good working relationships with assigned agencies and produce consistent sales and profit results. The incumbent works in the regional or branch office with occasional travel required to attend meetings or visit agents.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develop required information for operations department assistants and processors to quote new and renewal business, change requests, and perform other duties required to underwrite and process commercial lines of business;
2. Communicate with agents as needed to service agents and assist the account executives to assure overwhelming service;
3. Approve renewals, change requests and miscellaneous items in accordance with established guidelines and/or directives from the account executive;
4. Review and prepare new business, renewals and change requests for account executives/manager review, making recommendations for action when such are beyond the incumbent's authority
5. Order, review, and process BVS property valuations and loss control reports as necessary to underwrite a risk.
6. Participate in the review and evaluation of agencies, making recommendations on agency and book management issues.
7. Participate in special projects and assume additional responsibilities as necessary from time to time for the improvement of the sales and underwriting performance of the region/company.
8. Provides technical guidance and coaching to others with less experience or knowledge. Minimum Experience / Education:

A minimum of 5 years in commercial lines underwriting, or equivalent work experience in which analytical decision-making and interpersonal skills were required.
College degree or a combination of education and experience deemed an equivalent of a degree; should possess INS 23, AU 65-66, or CPCU 551 and 552.
Communication and Collaboration Skills:
Written: The ability and willingness to exchange thoughts and ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, with company personnel, agents, insureds, and other external customers.
Oral: The ability to understand and clearly and concisely communicate company goals and decisions to agents and insureds using the most effective method for the situation. Should be able to conduct meetings and training sessions professionally and effectively.
Technical Knowledge: A expert understanding of the functional components of the job, including a familiarity with workflow procedures, authority levels, reinsurance restrictions, the CLM and NCCI manual rating procedures, and alternatives available to profitably write business.
Ability to analyze complex, multi-class, multi-location risks and develop a comprehensive plan including pricing, proper form application, terms and conditions to enhance the potential profitable performance of the risk.
Demonstrate understanding of company underwriting guidelines, philosophy and pricing structure through above average scores on underwriting audits.
Incumbent also has an awareness and ability to develop and nurture effective working relationships with others.
Competence in use of Word and Excel is a plus.
Problem Solving: Should be considered an expert in the ability to gather and review all relevant information and make prompt decision after utilizing available resources and evaluating likely outcomes of alternatives. Must be able to make recommendations and propose innovative solutions for clients.
