Job Description

The Underwriting Department at Allstate Benefits has an immediate opening for a Group Underwriter who will under general supervision, underwrite accounts requesting group products for new and renewal business, add-ons to existing clients, contract revisions, and other policyowner service work. The underwriting department is responsible for providing effective risk management in support of our corporate goals and current risk tolerance. This includes applying account level underwriting (Industry, persistency, claims, etc.) and individual application level underwriting (health history, product pricing, compliance standards, etc).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes data related to the risk being underwritten for cases, in order to determine what benefits, if any, can be offered and at what rates.
  • Document reasons and thought processes to support case level decisions made.
  • Conducts research in order to secure additional data needed to make determinations on benefits and premiums.
  • Reviews requests for master policy changes to determine eligibility.
  • Communicates with policy owners, applicants, brokers, agencies, and/or other sources concerning underwriting decisions and procedures.
  • Develop credibility with sales force, brokers, as well as internal and external customers.
  • Maintain positive relationships with our internal and external customers through effective Written and Verbal Communication skills, including agents, proposed insureds, and State Department of Insurance.
  • Prepares proposal and/or offer information and coordinates final proposal presentation, including preparation of all required exhibits.
  • This position is in a fast-paced, high volume environment with set production goals.

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of Group Insurance Underwriting and/or Special Risk Underwriting skills and experience in Life, Disability, Health and/or Worksite products..
  • Proficient computer skills using various software packages including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Proven use of judgment and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to make decisions and justify the decisions with sound and logical reasoning.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude.
  • Strong relationship building with internal and external business partners.
  • Ability to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Ability to persuade and negotiate.
  • Financial aptitude for understanding pricing strategies and their potential impact on financial results.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven use of judgment and critical thinking abilities.
  • Solid analytical skills with the ability to analyze risk.
