Supports both business unit-wide pricing strategies and individual, large account pricing efforts, as well as planning, reserving, exposure management and reinsurance efforts. May participate in or manage complex projects. May supervise staff, including other actuaries.

Welcome to Ocean Marine! This role presents a rare opportunity to learn about and develop applications for a line of business in which actuarial science is still in a developmental phase. And with industry-leading data, and no rates, rules or forms filings for any of our unique Ocean coverages, there's a lot of room for actuarial innovation to help out-select and outperform the market, and a Business Unit Management Team looking to us to provide it! In this position, you will take on both a BU and Product support role. You will help develop new benchmarking approaches and create benchmarking tools for lines of business where none yet exist, and partner with the BU Management Team to develop self-service profitability and exposure monitoring applications. You will also support the unit's reinsurance program renewal efforts, planning efforts and profitability reviews, as well as manage and/or participate in more complex projects. Additionally, some projects will provide you with an opportunity to present your findings to Actuarial and/or BU Leadership. This business-facing role requires strong communication, relationship management, critical thinking, technical and organizational skills. The position reports directly to the BU Lead Actuary, and supervises actuarial staff.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
Pricing/Ratemaking: Support the development of innovative price benchmarking approaches and tools, and help oversee their implementation. Work with Underwriting to upgrade large account pricing tools and support the development and pricing of new products, as required. Support Underwriting in the pricing of large complex deals. Provide analysis of trends/factors/issues impacting Underwriting results. Work with Claim and Underwriting as needed to interpret findings, and then work with Underwriting to determine action plans. Communicate with Finance and other functions as appropriate.

Planning/Forecasting: Support trend analyses and the forecast and interpretation of underwriting results. Perform analyses on expected catastrophe costs and reinsurance profitability. Communicate results to aid in the development of financial business plans and business strategies.

Management Info: Support the continued development of data retrieval, categorization, and reporting systems. Oversee the production of reports needed by senior management, Underwriting and Operations to monitor profitability, business initiative implementation, and data quality.

Research: Identify potential research areas and assess usefulness. Participate in and/or oversee the implementation of actions decided upon through research. May develop and work with predictive modeling concepts.

Project Mgmt: Participate in key/complex actuarial projects, including cross-company actuarial initiatives. Present projects to senior level underwriting and actuarial management.

Leadership/Mgmt: May supervise actuarial staff. Develop objectives and development plans and manage performance of staff to achieve excellence and ensure effective performance. Assist in determining goals and setting direction and priorities for the unit.

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
College Degree in actuarial science, mathematics, economics or statistics or equivalent. Generally has 5+ years of Actuarial/Analytical experience. Understanding with base knowledge in complete range of actuarial functions, including but not limited to, reserving, pricing, business planning, financial reporting, management information, product development, reinsurance and database management. Independent analysis of challenging business issues. Basic understanding of actuarial and other insurance related models (i.e. property CAT, ROE and RBC models). Strong understanding of financial reporting, both GAAP and Stat. Strong understanding of income statements and balance sheets. Strong understanding of insurance products and marketplace conditions and how they impact financial models and results. Strong PC skills - Excel, Access, PowerPoint & Word. Sound understanding of databases and data extraction. Crisp and confident communication of analysis.
