UFG is seeking a strategic and technical systems engineer to participate in the development, maintenance, support and enhancement of IT systems and applications. The systems engineer is an advanced technical resource that requires a broad range of systems experience, exceptional analytical skills and the ability to succeed in both a team and individual contributor role.

  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues and maintain high system availability in accordance with UFG standards. Provide 2nd and 3rd level support when needed.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures; coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.

  • Install, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools.

  • Propose and create system design models, specifications, diagrams, and charts.

  • Participate in the design of information and operational support systems.

  • Perform cost-benefit and return on investment analyses for proposed systems to aid management in making implementation decisions.

  • Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure system-related products and services.

  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, system and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Proactively ensure the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability.

  • Monitor and test application performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work with developers to implement those fixes.

  • Oversee and implement system upgrade and patching strategies.

  • Provide technical guidance to other IT and business areas within the enterprise regarding the future direction of systems within area of responsibility and how they may be exploited for the benefit of the business.

  • Two year degree in information technology, computer science or related technical field

  • Four to six years of advanced level system administration work experience

  • Experience with Windows operating systems, networking equipment and firewall configurations.

  • Expert knowledge of network protocols and applications.

  • Expert knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures used to develop networking schemes.

  • Expert knowledge of Firewall and networking hardware and software.

  • Expert knowledge and understanding of Windows operating systems and Windows Active Directory network.

  • Expert knowledge of telephony and IP phone systems.

  • Strong problem solving/reasoning skills.

  • Excellent communication skills.
