We got our start as a small brokerage firm handling the insurance needs of some 300 cooperatives and condominiums. That changed dramatically in 1987, when we pioneered the country's first Real Estate Umbrella Liability Purchasing Group - a new and better way to handle risk. It delivered the critical liability coverages those clients needed at a price that was significantly below what they had been paying.
Since then we've grown dramatically. In 1995, we became full-time program developers. In 1996, we switched from retail distribution to wholesale distribution. Today, we're the country's foremost developers,managers and distributors of insurance products for the small and mid-sized real estate owners.
Our customers are insurance agents/brokers. They are the channel we rely on for the distribution of our products. We provide the information, service and tools they need to excel in the delivery of risk management solutions to their customers. Our agents and brokers typically serve a wide range of clients - from global, national and middle market organizations to small businesses and individuals. The customer segments we focus on are businesses with between $3 and $25 million in revenue with 10 to 100 employees who pay $10,000 to $100,000 a year for property/casualty insurance.
We've put together a group of people and companies to help us create products that are differentiated, fill a void and offer a clear economic advantage to all involved. Together they give us a full range of capabilities and enable us to develop innovative solutions that meet the market's demands head on.
We've grown enormously since becoming full-time program developers in 1995. Our revenues have grown at a compound annual rate in excess of 25%, reaching the $15 million mark in 2000. What's more, our EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) has always been greater than 25%. Here are some other key statistics:
We have eight programs in place. In our real estate programs alone, we serve more than 350,000 residential units and 160 million square feet of office building space. We partner with 500 agents/brokers throughout the United States
Our growth and success have come from setting aggressive goals, then putting our all into reaching them. The major objective we're working toward now is to become one of the largest national program developers, managers and distributors within seven years. We'll do that by focusing on these goals:
First and foremost, we'll continue to make the journey intellectually and financially rewarding - and FUN - for our colleagues. We'll remain true to our mission of using our intellectual, financial, technological and service assets to help small businesses as we grow our revenues while maintaining a 25% EBITDA. We'll launch at least two new programs a year. We'll add to our product line-up and add value by branching out into life, benefits, credit and investment products.
We'll continue to expand our retail broker network. We'll continue to deliver the effective solutions and strong results our customers and business partners need. In the next few years, we'll acquire program managers, managing general agents and wholesalers who can benefit from our creativity, insight and expertise as well as our financial and technological capabilities.
